Absurd, maybe, but true. He took this trip solo in the summer of 2015, spanning 11,341 miles through thirty states in forty-eight days. Balukjian actively engaged with his subjects—taking a hitting lesson from Rance Mulliniks, watching kung fu movies with Garry Templeton, and going to the zoo with Don Carman. In the process of finding all the players but one, he discovered an astonishing range of experiences and untold stories in their post-baseball lives, and he realized that we all have more in common with ballplayers than we think. While crisscrossing the country, Balukjian retraced his own past, reconnecting with lost loves and coming to terms with his lifelong battle with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Audiobook is Good TO READ!

It's a shame, because the book is clearly an intriguing idea, but the reading experience is really hard to get through primarily due to Balukjian himself. The athletes he crosses paths with are for the most part interesting, and a few of the chapters were strong enough that I would have liked to spend more time with the players profiled.But Balukjian is constantly there as the only thread tying the book together - and the only way for that to work is for him to be either charismatic or at least willing to own his worst impulses and grow up a little on the road. Balukjian clearly, from the narrative, thinks he's achieved the latter, but that certainly wasn't my experience - his sophomoric (and sometimes just relentlessly tiresome) sense of humor, his often slimy comments about women, his weirdly hostile approach to anyone he's interviewing who he doesn't see as a potential father figure - add up to making the experience of being on a road trip with him really exhausting. In his best moments, he's tolerable - able to provide a little insight into the person he's interviewing while sharing a human moment or two. But in his worst moments, I nearly threw the book across the room - the second Carlton Fisk chapter is just an incredible display of a self important jerk amusing himself and not caring at all how he's coming across. It's bizarre that he thinks this is a good way to write the book, and maybe even more so that his editor left it this way.Anyway, if you either have a much higher tolerance level for self involved people than I do, or if you just read Balukjian's behavior as amusing instead of cringe inducing, I can see some good sections in this book that you might enjoy, especially if you have fond memories of baseball in the 1980s and want to visit with some players you remember from those days, hence the three star rating. But to be honest, I don't think I would recommend this book even to friends of mine who love baseball. There are too many other wonderful baseball books out there to invest time in this one.
